About HomeSums
HomeSums is a free set of calculators and planners for the sums that come with running a home: what an appliance costs to run, how much paint to buy, what size radiator a room needs, or whether solar panels would pay for themselves.

Who runs HomeSums
HomeSums is run by Reed Sykes, an individual based in Girona, Spain. It is not a company, a shop or a comparison site, and no manufacturer or retailer pays for what appears on it.
As a maintenance manager at a recently renovated masia hotel in Girona, Reed frequently calculates materials for various projects—from estimating paint quantities to determining curtain sizes. His years of living off-grid inspired the “solar and off-grid” tools on the site. HomeSums.com began as a simple idea: to create easy-to-use tools that help DIYers with their everyday needs.
Why it exists
Most home decisions come down to a few numbers, and they are often hard to get. Shop calculators tend to stop at a count of their own products, many online calculators are American and work in feet and dollars, and energy advice is often too general to apply to your own home.
HomeSums tries to give you a clear, practical answer for your situation, explain how it was worked out, and show what to do with it.
What you will find here
- Energy and bills: running costs, heating costs, radiator and heat pump sizes, insulation, electric car charging.
- Damp and air: dehumidifier sizes and the risk of condensation and mould.
- Solar and off-grid: roof solar, plug-in solar, off-grid batteries and 12 V cable sizes.
- DIY and materials: paint, tiles, wallpaper, flooring, decking, concrete and gravel, with a list of what you will need.
- Home and living: laundry symbols, curtain sizes and TV sizes.
New tools are added when people search for an answer that HomeSums can give well.
How the tools work
- Free, with no sign-up. Every tool works straight away.
- Private. The numbers you enter stay in your browser: nothing is sent to HomeSums or stored. There are no cookies, no analytics and no advertising trackers (see the Privacy Policy).
- For the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe. Metric units, with prices in euros or pounds.
- Open about the maths. Each tool page explains its method, and the How we calculate page lists the standards, sources and assumptions behind every tool.
- Built with AI assistance. Reed builds and maintains the tools and pages with the help of AI (Claude, by Anthropic). Every method is checked against the published standards and sources listed on the How we calculate page, and every tool is tested before it goes live.
Estimates, not professional advice
The results are estimates from the figures you enter and from typical values. Real costs, sizes and performance vary. For anything involving mains electricity, gas, structural work, or a large purchase such as a heat pump or solar panels, get a qualified professional to check and quote for your home.
How HomeSums is paid for
At the moment HomeSums has no advertising and no affiliate links, and it earns nothing.
In future some pages may link to products that match your result, such as a dehumidifier of the size the tool suggests, and HomeSums may earn a small commission if you buy through those links. If that happens, the links will be clearly labelled, the page will say so, and it will never change the results a tool gives you.
Use the tools on your own website
Every tool has an Embed button with code you can paste into your own website or blog, free of charge, as long as the “by HomeSums” credit link stays in place.
